Flying Scot Atlantic Coast Championship, 9-22 and 9-23
Toms River, New Jersey.
Conditions between Saturday and Sunday
couldn't have been more different. On Saturday the 10 to 15 knot
winds blew from the south with light cells of rain passing through the
area. On Sunday the 8 to 12 wind blew from the north under clear
sunny skies. Conditions both days made for some great
racing. The race committee did an excellent job of getting races
off on time and set nice length windward leeward courses with two and a
half laps each. There was plenty of opportunity to pickoff boats
or unfortunately fall behind. RESULTS

Flying Scot Greater New York District Championship, Sept.
15th and 16th Sayville Yacht Club, New York. - Results
- Sorry to windy for taking photos :(
The GNY Districts were held this past weekend in Bluepoint, NY at the Sayville
YC. Winds on Saturday started very light but, as the clouds cleared and the sun broke out the winds picked
up very impressively. 24 boats registered. By the warning signal of the first race winds were in
the high teens lower 20’s with some puffs in the upper 20’s. Robyn and I dropped out before
the start along with 9 other two man boats leaving 14 boats on the starting line.
The wind blowing out of the NW meant that the windward mark was right off the beach of the club.
Watching the competitors rounding the mark and popping the kite in those wind conditions was
an amazing site. A Melges 24 sailor said the reaches and down wind legs were just as fast
and crazy as on his Megles 24 in similar conditions. Saturday the RC got three races off and on Sunday in a dieing wind. They got two more races off to complete the regatta.
PJ Patin and Dan Neff wound up tie with PJ taking the championship again for the second year in a row.
The mystery man, Josh Goldman took third. Yeah, he still sails Scots!
At the end of the event it was my pleasure to introduce the new District governor for the Greater NY district, Melanie Dunham. Melanie can be reached at
FS2601@aol.com
Those of you who know Melanie know that she will do a great job for you. For those of you who don’t know her, you will find out very soon.
It’s been a pleasure working with you all and I look forward to seeing you all out on the race course.
Thanks,
John Cooke

NAC and 50th Blog by Kim and Dave Thinel's. http://www.sailrace.blogspot.com/ |

As some of you know we did daily email reports from our recent trip to the Flying Scot North Americans. We decided to use them (with some edits) to create a blog with some photos from along the way.
Still have to figure some features out but it is mostly finished. When you click this link www.sailrace.blogspot.com you should arrive at the site. The format is that the most recent entry shows first, in my case that is the Fleet racing from this past Saturday, which was also an organized thing to get all Scots on the water that day for the 50th Anniversary. So we did, we had thunderstorms and some carnage - additional photos should be coming soon.
If after looking at the first page you are not so bored that you want to see the others, you may want to start near the beginning, since they will be the story of the NAC trip. Easiest way to do that is to look on the right side of the page where it says “ARCHIVES” click the oldest one and you are there. |

17 Ideas to Help Grow A One-Design Fleet - by John Burnham Cruising World editor John Burnham has been a passionate sailor and US SAILING volunteer for many years. Through the years, John has traveled the globe to participate in and/or write about sailing events. In other words, he knows a thing or two about sailing and about how to grow the sport of sailing.
A few years ago, John wrote an interesting article filled with 17 ideas to help a one-design fleet grow. We find that these ideas are still valid today. From organizing a post-race roast with the top 3 skippers of the day standing up in front of the fleet describing their successes to promoting family racing by organizing a husband/wife or parent/child championship.

ONE-DESIGN SURVEY SAYS TIDE IS HIGH
Flying Scot is 6th out of more that 200 fleet surveyed.
For the third time, US SAILING teamed up with Sailing World magazine to take the pulse of one-design sailing in this country and the news is good. Of the classes that responded to the survey, many more classes are growing (30) than shrinking (8), and many classes are maintaining status quo (30). Sailing World Editor David Reed presented the complete results and his unique analysis at US SAILING's One-Design Symposium last week in New Orleans.

Congratulations to Paul Jon Patin, Matt
Cottrell, and Christian Cremer on sailing a consistent regatta.
Back in June the Districts were postponed due
to no wind both Saturday and Sunday. Racing resumed on August 26th
with winds out of the Northeast at 10 to 15 with large swells mixed
in with some very lumpy seas to make it difficult at times to find a
good groove. The swells made for some fun surfing on the
downwind legs. The winds built to 20 and shifted right a bit
as the day progressed. The race committee mixed it up with two
windward leeward courses and a triangle to round out the three race series.
Awards went to the top 5 racers. Results

The Greater New York Districts will be held this coming Saturday (8/26) at Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport CT. Long range forecast is calling for a sunny day and high about 80 degrees.
Cedar Point YC is surrounded on three sides by water. We have a beach and a great playground for the young family members. “The Galley’ will be open for lunch and ice cream. Cedar Point YC will be a great place for the land crew to spend the day while racing is going on.
www.cedarpointyc.org
Fleet 177 members will be at the club on Friday afternoon. We will have beer and soda and provide a light dinner Friday night (hamburgers and hot dogs or pizza). We will have coffee, juice, bagels, and donuts on Saturday AM. We will also provide 6 foot sandwiches and refreshments after the races.
Skipper’s meeting is at 930AM. Harbor gun is at 1000AM with the first warning gun at 1100AM.
We had 27 boats register for the June date at this time we are looking at between 35 and 40 boats.

| 2006 North American Championship Regatta, Corinthian Yacht Club, Marblehead, MA, July 9-14, 2006 The third qualifying race was held today. This afternoon, July 11th, shortly after all Flying Scots had been towed
or sailed to safety at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA, harbor by the Corinthian Race Committee, a micro-burst tornado devastated the Flying Scot fleet and many of the Yacht Clubs' boats and docks. More at FSSA....

| What ever hit the club went right to left. The path the burst took was only about 100-150 yards wide but, it went right through the fleet.
The count last night at 700PM was around 25 boats flipped over. It looked like about a dozen masts were bent.
NOAA reported wind gust of 98 mph. NO ONE WAS
HURT. The NAC's are cancelled.

Full Moon Update: Big thanks to Jackie Cattanach who forwarded the results on to me this morning.
Big wind was the order of the day, or weekend, for this regatta. It was delayed a day, and most of the competitors were game enough to stick it out. The wind was still blowing hard, but we survived with only one capsize on the day. Racing was close with 5 boats separated by only 4 points going into the last race.

The GNY Districts have been postponed. The
33 competitors patiently waited while a stationary weather front parked on top of Long Island Sound Saturday’s racing was abandoned on shore. We had no wind reading over 2 mph with heavy rains. Sunday morning found us with no wind. From 0800 until 1015 maximum wind reading both on land and at the race area was 2.5 mph. After monitoring weather radar and a forecast for heavy rain with possible lighting it was decided to fly AP over A. At 1330 heavy rain was reported.
The written posting from the RC PRO states that the GNY Districts will attempt to be held on 8/26/06 at Cedar Point Yacht Club. This is a tentative date until final approval by the Cedar Point BOG.
We expect approval. This will be a one day event.
Further details will follow. 6-26-06

The Full Moon Regatta hosted by Monmouth
Yacht Club in Red Bank New Jersey was postponed on
saturday due to high wind. Winds were 20 to 25 with gusts in the low
30's. The race committee postponed while competitors waited patently
to see if the wind would moderate a bit. Just after lunch the race
committee made a good decision to postpone all racing until Sunday
morning. Around 7:30 on Sunday conditions didn't look much better
with West wind in the 15 to 20 range. The good news was the gusts
were lower and not a frequent. At race time nothing changed.
The river offered some really shifty conditions on top of the strong
winds. Three race were held back to back with 10 competitors
fighting it out. Race scores and photos will be posted soon. 2-13-06 |

Congratulations to Amy
and Jeff, and Bonnie and Willson on sailing a consistent
series under some shifty and light air conditions. Saturday
was in the mid 90's all day with light and variable winds out of the
SE at 5 to 10 kts. The race committee tried for three, but
Mother Nature would only let them get in two nice windward leeward
races with five legs each. The third race was started in a
westerly that turned into an easterly half way up the first
leg. The November flag signaled the end of the day. Shortly
after racing the party got started on shore to some live music and a
great BBQ dinner put on by the members of the Lake Murray Sailing
Club. The racing resumed bright and early on Sunday with a
9:00 am start time. The winds were out of the ENE at 4 to 7
kts, and the racing got started on time. The shifty conditions
made for a lot of position changes through out the day. Consistency
was the key to remaining in the top positions. 5-29-06 |

What
were the conditions like sailing at Cedar Point YC on Long Island Sound?
John:
Two breezy days, big open courses, unfortunately a small fleet (never more than 9 on the line). Some unusual shifts, but
straight line speed, especially downwind, was the overall key.
Did you sail with two or
three?
John:
Jim Worth and I sailed.
How many races were there, and what was you best and worst race and why?
John:
There were five races. We were pleased to see Whitney Hall sailing "Irish Rover" to victory in the first race on Sunday. She started strongly at the boat end, just like her Dad used to, and led at every mark.
We were able to win all the other races, although John Cooke, Dave Jacobsen, Melanie Dunham, maybe others, led at times. But the long courses gave us the time to come back, using our 8 decades of combined experience. (We may not be fit, but we're wily.)
What did you like most about the regatta?
John:
We loved the long courses in open water, with room and time to think before you tack.
How was the Saturday evening Party?
John:
Saturday evening the fleet put on a great dinner and a loud band.
Let's get 20 boats there next year.
Thank
you and Congratulations to you and Jim on a fine regatta.

3-8-06 - Race 3 started on time
with winds 8 to 10 out of the SE. Both fleets sailed a windward
leeward five leg course. As the last few sailors finished race 3 the
winds died off. The competitors drifted around until 2:30 pm when a
SW wind filled in. The race committee quickly got race 4 under
way.
3-7-06 -
Race 2 started at 11:00 am. Winds were 15 to 20 out of the North
with a medium chop. The heavier crews had an advantage over the
lighter two person crews. At times there might have been some gusts
in the upper 20's. Again there was a clean start with no
X-flag in the championship fleet. After finishing the race, the committee
decided to send the competitors in to wait and see if the wind would
subside for race 3. After waiting several hours on shore the committee
postponed racing until tomorrow.

3-6-06 - There are 50 boats competing at
the 2006 Flying Scot Mid-Winters hosted by St. Petersburg Yacht Club in
sunny Florida. Shortly after the 1:00 pm skippers meeting the boats
hit the water. Winds were 10 to 15 out of the WNW. It was a
short sail out under spinnaker to the racing area. Winds were steady
with small 5 to 10 degree oscillations. Wave height was around a one
foot. The fleet of 35 championship sailors started cleanly after a
short postponement for a correction to the starting line. The fleet
of 15 challenger sailors started a short time after. Both sailed a
five leg windward leeward course. It was a great day to kick off the
start of the 2006 Flying Scot Mid-Winters Championships, but not a good
day for taking photos while at the helm. I hope to get some photos
as the week continues. Results are posted on the FSSA web site, www.fssa.com.

to jump start the event. We will present a slide show of Flying Scot
Racing from the past season. Look for your boat and friends.
Christine and I will be racing, but I hope to get some great photography
in between racing. Maybe a couple while racing too. Look for
us in 2929 and I will take your picture.

Please
join us on March 18th, 2006 to honor the life of Graham Hall.
We will be meeting for food, libations, stories, and slide
shows from 3-6pm at the Yokum Sailing Center at USMMA, Kings Point,
Ny. We are relying
on good networking to get this invitation out to Dad's friends, so
pass this on if you can. Please
RSVP to either Whitney (whitneyhall@earthlink.net
845-340-0907) or Morgan (morganhall@mac.com
707-357-0433). For
lodging, we will be staying at the Anchor Motor Inn (theanchorinn.com).
We thank you for all the love and friendship Dad received in
his final months. We
can not explain how much it meant to dad and us.
See you there.

| | In my last letter, I asked for ideas as to how we might assist the sailors and yacht clubs along the Gulf Coast that were devastated by Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. While there has not been a lot of good news to report from an area that is struggling to rebuild, the spirits of the sailors and club members remains high. I have received reports that many of the hulls owned by the clubs | survived – but not much else. In particular, there is a tremendous need for sails as well as boat hardware, spars and other sailing equipment. This includes not only gear for
Flying Scots, but also Opti’s, Sunfish, and Lasers used in sailing camp. Many of us have unused sailing items in our garages and basements. How about donating your surplus sails and gear to the Gulf Coast yacht clubs so severely hurt by Katrina and Rita? There are a few ways to direct your donations: click here for more information. 1-14-06 |

Happy Holidays everyone, Whit and I have been working on a few things for dads memorial these past few weeks... just wanted to keep you updated. Looking thru all Graham's photos, slides, videos and articles has been really informative, and interesting. We are working on a
memorial website complete with photos, a timeline, and opportunity for others to add thoughts, and memories as well. Its a work in progress, but I wanted to invite you all to visit the site and add to it what you'd like, or just to enjoy what's there. Dads email contacts list was unfortunately lost when a cup of water was spilled on his computer so if anyone could help by forwarding this email out to anyone else who knew Dad, it would be so greatly appreciated. Tentatively we are looking at
June 3rd as the date for his memorial. Most likely to be held at Kings Point. Although we LOVE the thought of holding it in conjunction with a Flying Scott regatta.... what better setting and crowd could Dad have possibly imagined? Please email whit whitneyhall@earthlink.net or I with any thoughts. www.graham.memory-of.com is the website address. 1/2/06 |
